In anticipation of International Women's Day for Peace & Disarmament on May 24, the Ecumenical Women's Initiative (EWI, www.eiz.hr), with support of the Women Peacemakers Program, is launching a new competition to fund the most creative and thought provoking proposal for a public outreach event regarding this day and theme.
By ‘disarmament’ we usually think of reducing or abolishing military weapons even though we know that this material change is only a small part of creating/building peace. However, the word disarmament also refers to the condition of being disarmed - implying dismantling barriers of fear in order to be open to the other and develop trust - that characterizes peace in the most positive sense. Therefore we call on women from the Western Balkans to rethink disarmament in this positive sense and propose an inventive and provocative event to celebrate this day. We believe that women, as often-marginalized actors in the public sphere, have the opportunity and ingenuity to reframe disarmament from ‘anti’ arms to a position of open arms.
The winner of the competition will receive an EWI prize of up to 1000 euro to host a media friendly event based on a fresh, innovative concept of disarmament, women and peace; an event with the broadest outreach for a small budget.
Eligible applicants are women from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia who are associated with a registered organization.
Proposals are due by 14.04.2014. EWI will announce the winner on 28.04.2014 and the event should take place on 24.05.2014, International Women’s Day of Peace and Disarmament.
Interested persons send their completed application forms - in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian or English - to natjecaj@eiz.hr. Any questions may be sent to the same address.
