On October 29, 2013, Suci Haryati received the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) Awards 2013 of Honorary of Excellence for Radio Documentary for the Indonesian radio documentary “The Silent Killer” of Radio Station Maya Pesona FM in West Nusa Tenggara. This program dealt with the increasing occurrence of breast and cervical cancer survivors among Indonesian women.
From the jury report: “The jury liked the variety of voices and experiences and the way the story was structured. The narrator was both authoritative and compassionate, and introduced the sound bites well. It also incorporated sounds from an event hosted by the Cancer Information and Support Center. The women featured in the story expressed raw emotion, which made the story very compelling. We were riveted by the story of these two survivors and the two caretakers, and felt the story would encourage listeners in Indonesia to be more open about these female cancers and to seek out medical care at the first sign of symptoms.”
Suci Haryati is one of the trainees of WPP’s Asia Training of Trainers Cycle on Gender- Based Active Nonviolence, which took place during 2012 and 2013. She is a media and peace activist, dedicated to increasing the voices of women in mainstream media. Upon winning the award, she shared with the WPP Asia Network:
“I would like passing on this information because I believe most of you are influencers, both in my professional and personal life. I produced "The Silent Killer", which has been influenced by our training and chats during the breaks about gender, masculinities and femininities at the level of concept and pratice. It told the story of 4 women (2 survivors and 2 young women, who took care of their mother and mother in law) connected with 2 common kinds of cancer in Indonesia (breast and cervix). They shared their experiences of how the disease defined not only their physical identity but also their nurture and nature role. I plan to produce more episodes, voicing people's experiences and opinions that probably most of major media will neglect-covering gender issues, conflict resolution, and diversity in religion and culture.”
