33 prominent peacebuilding organizations, including the Women Peacemakers Program (WPP), endorse an Open Letter to the Members of the UN Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG), covering the need of effective targets to promote sustainable peace.
Recalling the Rio Declaration’s statement that “Peace, development and environmental protection are interdependent and indivisible,” we are pleased that the OWG will discuss peaceful and non-violent societies alongside capable institutions and the rule of law. While distinct areas, they are both critical to promoting peace and sustainable development.
In the open letter, we are pleased to share with the OWG members a list of targets that we believe will be effective in promoting peace and sustainable development. The targets have been endorsed by 33 organizations working on peacebuilding, conflict prevention and violence reduction in a wide range of countries.
WPP has actively given input to the letter and targets, highlighting the need for the inclusion of women in decision-making procedures and investing in nonviolent alternatives for conflict resolution. We feel that these targets, to be addressed under specific goals areas and to integrated across the framework, would be effective in promoting peace as both an outcome and enabler of development.
