Women have often been at the forefront of peacebuilding and disarmament initiatives. On May 24 - International Women's Day for Peace and Disarmament, the Women Peacemakers Program (WPP) celebrates these historic efforts and accomplishments, calling for the incorporation of women’s voices and leadership in peace processes, and highlighting the need to invest in peace and disarmament.
Already for more than 13 years, WPP has been celebrating May 24 – International Women’s Day for Peace & Disarmament. Over the years, May 24 activities have taken place all over the world. This year is no exception, with various May 24 celebrations on a worldwide scale.
This year, May 24 also marked the start of the "Gender & Militarism: Analyzing the Links to Strategize for Peace" Campaign. This social media campaign takes place for six weeks, from May 24 - July 4 and will advocate for the awareness and action on the multi-layered connections between gender and militarism, and will highlight gender-sensitive nonviolent action (nonviolent people power) as an alternative for conflict resolution. Make sure to follow #Gender&Militarism !
